The Houston Chronicle’s Andrew Dansby spoke with saxophonist Joshua Redman as part of a piece exploring “Houston’s hot jazz summer.”
“I loved all their music early on, and I was attracted to the music on an emotional level, a spiritual level,” Redman said. “And also on a very personal level. Their music was so foundational to the language for anyone serious about playing jazz. But that’s a functional sort of listening, like doing homework. It has been nice to return to the music. In general, we just call some tunes, play the tunes and rediscover them every night. Maybe it’s not like a ‘return to innocence’ or anything like that. But I’ve enjoyed engaging with the music where it’s less an assignment or a project. It’s more just a joy.”
