Welcome

Welcome to the 24-25 Season
ALCHEMY: The Magic of Musical Transformation

alchemy: a medieval chemical science attempting to change ordinary metals into gold;
a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation or combination

The medieval alchemists sought to take an ordinary metal and turn it into gold.  At DACAMERA this season, we experience this “seemingly magical process of transformation” in music. Every composer inherits a culture, a language, a heritage to which they respond in their own creative voice. Throughout this concert season, we listen to voices evolve, to generational dialogue, to the magical transformation of what is inherited into something new. An ancient folk tune finds new life as a string quartet; music from Shakespeare’s day inspires a 21st century composer; baroque music is re-invented with a jazz ensemble. Time past and time present become one in the hands of a great artist.

There are many threads to follow in this concert season. International string quartets, piano virtuosos, jazz greats, leading composers of today…Music inspired by painting, by stories, by personal history. Beyond the electrifying performances, we will also hear the links across time. The rediscovered Florence Price, the first Black woman to have her music performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra–whose musical heritage leads us back to Dvorak. The brilliant British composer Thomas Adès in his first Houston appearance- a composer known for the alchemy he brings to his works inspired by the past. Maverick jazz pianist Jason Moran responds to the great Duke Ellington. Piano superstar Alexandre Kantorow bursts onto the music scene, bringing his own personal stamp to the great romantic repertoire. A deep dive into the original minds that founded a movement in the 1960s which bears new fruit today, with a world premiere by the legendary Roscoe Mitchell.

Artists who are continually responding, inventing, creating musical magic.  Discover it all with us this season.
