Da Camera Young Artist Composer-in-Residence

The Composer-in-Residence track is designed for graduate students or young professionals who have completed at least a bachelor’s degree in music and are interested in opportunities to connect with the Houston community and learn skills that will help nurture and develop their careers.

Candidates for Da Camera Young Artist Composer-in-Residence:

  • are aspiring professional composers who are interested in composing music for the Da Camera Young Artists to be performed in the Houston community as well as for young student musicians to be performed in Houston schools
  • are interested in working with students to share their interest in the music and introduce school children to the creative act of composing
  • have completed at least a bachelor's degree in music
  • are able to participate in regular workshops*

* The Young Artist Composer-in-Residence schedule is designed to complement university study or to allow professional musicians the ability to maintain a private studio, teach, and apply for university teaching jobs.

Involvement as a Composer-in-Residence of the Young Artist Program will include:

Compositional Opportunities

Opportunities to collaborate with fellow Young Artists and local students:
  • Compose chamber works for fellow Young Artists to perform in Da Camera Community Initiative Concerts
  • Compose a work in collaboration with students from local schools

Educational Opportunities

Participation in Da Camera Music Encounters:

  • Classroom visits in collaboration with core-foundation teachers in Houston schools
  • Work with students with neurological differences at The Monarch School
Career Development
Participation in a series of workshops and master classes with leading Houston professionals and Da Camera guest artists
  • Career-development workshops, which generally occur on selected Saturday mornings
  • Participation in master classes with guest artists

Benefits

Per-service honoraria resulting in 2014-15 season stipend of $1,000-$1,500.

Chamber music commissions, recent commissions include works written in conjunction with:

  • the Picasso: Black and White exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston
  • the Magritte: Mystery of the Ordinary exhibition at The Menil Collection
  • resident artists at the Galveston Artist Residency, including an interactive work for dancer and two percussionists
  • four school music programs brought together to perform the work as part of The Museum Experience

Career development workshops on topics pertaining to:

  • Fusing Personal Passion with Creative Programming
  • Sharing Music with Young People in the Schools
  • Utilizing Marketing and Personal Media
  • The Fundamentals of Fundraising and Grant Writing
  • Tax Preparation for Musicians

  • Success with Studio and Personal Recording
  • Entrepreneurship in the Music Industry
  • Feldenkrais: Awareness through Movement and Functional Integration
