St. Lawrence String Quartet: Adams and Beethoven Friday, March 4, 2011; 8:00 PM Zilkha Hall, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts
John Adams String Quartet Beethoven Quartet in C Sharp Minor, Op. 131
St. Lawrence String Quartet (Geoff Nuttall, violin; Scott St. John, violin; Lesley Robertson, viola; Christopher Costanza, cello)
Old and new worlds collide when this electrifying ensemble, long a favorite of Da Camera audiences, returns to perform one of Beethoven’s most profound late quartets and a new work written for them by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer John Adams. Adams, best known for the operas Nixon in China and Doctor Atomic, was recently described as a “post-minimalist titan” by The New Yorker.
“John Adams’ String Quartet is a stunner. Performed by the St. Lawrence String Quartet…the piece emerged as one of his most brilliant and inventive masterworks.” – San Jose Mercury News
